Zuzzy Mat Review

So back at the beginning of October I ordered a Zuzzy mat, and now that I’ve played with it, I feel like a little review.

Zuzzy is a very small company of artists that makes terrain and gaming mats. Their gaming mats are made from latex and have a very defined texture to them. It’s enough to stand out and give clear definition but not enough to be uneven or make the mat hard to roll up.

Anyways, I got the 6’x4’ Sulfur Fields mat and it ran me about $58. It came all rolled up around a cardboard tube in a clear plastic bag.

So I laid out a tarp on my porch and unrolled it. They recommend you give it a wipe down with a wet cloth because of the smell of fresh made latex, and it did indeed have a plasticky smell. The next day when it dried I took some craft paints and drybrushed 3 different colors according to the 3 different main textures on the mat. After letting that dry for a day I made a black wash out of craft paint and washed the whole mat. It total it probably took me about 2 hours, it just felt longer because I was leaning over a mat on my knees the whole time. Zuzzy recommends only painting with drybrushing and washing techniques so the paint will stay on, and that seems to be going great so far.

I’ve played on felt and the GW realm of battle board, and I have to say I think this is the best compromise between the two. Ease of use, storage, setup, cost, while still looking nice and realistic. I really considered getting the realm of battle board but it is just so expensive, and with the hills designed into it there’s a limited number of setups you can do. These mats give you a great base to place whatever terrain you want anywhere you want, and then at the end you can roll it back up and hide it away.

I’m very happy with how it looks and the product overall. The single downside is that Zuzzy is a small company and they are already backed up with orders. As I mentioned, I placed the order at the beginning of October and it arrived December 7th. So they make a great product, but you’ll have to be patient. I’m seriously considering getting another one now, and by the time I feel I need a change of scenery from this mat, a new one will have arrived. A great little project and really adds to the game.

(Disclaimer: I bought and paid for this myself, Zuzzy didn’t contact me or give me anything for a review)

a couple of my 5 screamers… and no I’m not going all cheese daemon army, just wanted some fluffy allies for my thousand sons and co.

since I did my csm squad as word bearers, had to repaint the obliterators. A real pain to strip them after fully painting them but it would have driven me up the wall.

terrain is everything

a bloody fire from the warp…

some bearers of the word

my other chaos spawn, it’s after the one ring
